The child savers: refers to the 19th century north american social reformers who were influential in the creation of a separate justice system for juveniles. Society can"t deal with the fact that you have a bad family, but they can help you afterwards. They were trying to control the lower class (immigrants: social reformers of 19th and 20th century were "self-serving" rather than altruistic. Social reformers and the juvenile justice system: juveniles subjected to arbitrary and degrading punishments. Interestingly focus on class over anything else (race: progressive social reformers worked with capitalists to develop jjs. Child savers defended capitalism and did not want to upset the status quo. The jjs protected roles in capitalism for the middle or upper class. Humanistic enterprise: movement created by middle and upper classes to protect their class, power, and privilege - platt, business mans movement: trying to maintain privilege for the upper class.
