Manufacturing guilt chapter 6 - thomas sophonow. Sophonow was accused of murdering barbara stoppel in a doughnut shop. Nobody who claims to have seen the murderer could identify sophonow in a police line- up, even doerkeson who claimed to have wrestled the assailant. Doerkeson was arrested for failure to pay a traffic fine and was placed in the same holding cell as sophonow, in which he was able to identify sophonow as the assailant. In fact he had bought many christmas stockings and handed them out to the children"s ward at the hospital: the 3 nurses in 2 hospitals claim they remember seeing sophonow deliver these gifts. His lawyer secured the receipts for his car repair and evidence demonstrating a call made to his mother between 7:52-7:56 that evening. Dangerfield also urged the jury to dismiss sophonow"s hospital alibi as pure invention: jury declared a mistrial.
