Document Summary
Canadian family, is something that"s only happened in the last few hundred years ! Aboriginal families- pre colonization: overlapping nuclear family, extended family, and clan structures; practised gender complementarity! In the book they mention a date that is inaccurate, the indian act date is wrong (1867 is not correct, it was in 1876)! There was a lot of variation within aboriginal societies, there was different cultures, norms, structures just as there is differences around europe ! Some clans are mater lineal (mothers line) or patrilineal (fathers line)! There were cases of women being warriors at times if needed ! Europeans that came over, only dealt with the male chiefs without consulting the clan mothers, so gave the message to aboriginal societies that women had little value separation of spheres post 1850! For men: work"= paid labour, breadwinner ! Ideology largely white, middle-class, but applied to all! 1900: crisis of the north american family!
