Men who were not athenian were referred to by their city and not their deme. Infant girls were given names but the name of the deme was not used. Athenian women were seen as citizens but did not have the right to vote- hence not being enrolled in the deme. Genitive of either the father of the husbands names could be used as well in addition to the first name. Women"s names were often variants of names of their brothers. Consisted of the first name he or she had while they were free. Name of persons home city was also often given. Overlap noticed between slave names and names of citizens.
