When commodus was assassinated he had not named a successor. This led to a period of civil war where 5 individuals were named emperor in ad 193. His death marks the end of the antonine dynasty. Appointed as princeps by the senate and only lasted 3 months. Dio cassius 73. 10. 3: [pertinax] failed to comprehend that one cannot safely reform everything at once . Beyond sculpture and coins there is almost no material culture associated with this emperor. Portraits must have been a priority for new emperors. Mimicked marcus aurelius but had a more veristic style. Very miniscule differences in the emperor"s depictions. Won a bidding war at rome for the position of emperor. Only lasted in the position for 3 months. Made himself look like marcus aurelius as well. Military is gaining all the power in choosing the emperor of rome.
