CS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Paul Lazarsfeld, Todd Gitlin, Theodor W. Adorno
Document Summary
The research was funded by various sources with the ultimate goal of making media more effective. In the late 1930"s this approach was challenges with a group of jewish scholars who settled in the us and developed the frankfurt school. Theodor adorno and herbert marcuse came into conflict with paul lazarsfeld. This conflict motivated lazarsfeld to write his 1941 article and he labeled his approach administrative and the frankfurt schools critical: administrative research is conducted in the service of a public or private administrative agency. Differs from administrative work in two respects. It develops a theory of the prevailing social trends of our times, general trends which yet require consideration in any concrete research problem. Seems to imply ideas of basic human values according to which an actual or desired effect should be appraised. Critical research begins with social theory, contains normative values, and places communication in the larger social context.
