EM202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Intentionality
Document Summary
Teacher-student relationships have a fundamentally narrative character; it involves a narrating. Subject (teacher) and patient, listening objects (students) and the contents tend, in the process of being narrated, to become lifeless and petrified. Narration leads the student to memorize mechanically the narrated concent and turns them into. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize and repeat (banking concept of education) In the banking concept, knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to know anything. Projecting an absolute ignorance onto others (characteristic of the ideology of oppression) negates education and knowledge as processes of inquiry. The teacher, by considering their ignore absolute, justifies his own existence and presents himself as the students" necessary opposite. Education must begin w the solution of the teacher-student contradiction so that both are simultaneously teachers and students.
