Document Summary

In genre fiction/popular fiction everything is structured to revolve around plot including theme, character and setting e. g go jump in the pool. Opposite of literary fiction which is rather unconcerned with plot and focuses more on style (e. g virginia woolf). The relationship between literary fiction and popular fiction is part of a relationship between high culture (literary fiction, live opera, classical music, etc. ,) and low culture (genre/popular fiction, music videos on youtube, boy bands, etc. ,). What appeals to more people is going to sell better. Easily recognized as a genre" e. g romance, mystery, etc. , May succeed in getting reluctant readers to read. Formulaic & predictable (boy meets girl -> boy loses girl -> boy and girl re-unite) Repetitive (if you"ve read one harlequin romance you"ve read them all this is not necessarily a problem for all readers) Genre: category of text defined by its features, conventions, and patterns. Genres are not fixed, they evolve over time.
