ES290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: National Forest Management Act Of 1976, Rangeland, Water Cycle
Document Summary
Forests around the world account for 20-45% of the land cover and around 60% of the worlds. Deforestation and desertification forests are in the tropical zone (has great biomass volumes) Approx 75% of all tropical forests consist of broadleaved species, while more coniferous forests are found in higher latitudes running across north america and eurasia. Tropical deforestation: rate over the last 20 years has been 10-12 millionha/year. Plantation forests (ofter= monocultures) account for 4% of the total forest cover, which is normally found in developed countries (limited diversity species compared to natural forests), but have higher productivity than natural forests. Facts from textbook: deforestation is a primary feature of the developing world (annual rates in developing countries= Point from destruction to regeneration of the resource base) Multi-use management recognizes that a resource has importance to different user groups and that these demands can be made at the same time.
