PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Systematic Desensitization, Classical Conditioning, Contiguity
Document Summary
Based on internal responses to naturally occurring stimul. Is a natural response no learning involved. Noted dogs salivated at sounds (e. g. footsteps; tone) Ucr and cr are the same the thing. Many advertisers attempt to make their products conditioned stimuli that elicit pleasant emotional responses by pairing their products with attractive or popular people or sexual imagery. Factors that enhance acquisition: contingency and contiguity (presentation order) Ucs must always be resented before the cs for classical conditioning to work. Contingency = the frequency in which it happens. Generalization: stimuli similar to initial cs elicit a cr, aids in survival. Discrimination: cr occurs to one stimulus but not to another. Extinction: process in which cs is presented in absence of ucs, causes cr to weaken and eventually disappear. Spontaneous recovery: after a rest period, and without any new learning trials, the reappearance of a previously extinguished cr, usually weaker than initial cr, extinguishes more rapidly.
