PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Falsifiability, Tanning Bed, Selection Bias
Document Summary
Experimental research methods: examines how one variable causes another variable to change. Highlight in textbook (types of reasoning) chapter 2. Our hypothesis- (a) playing violent video games results in (b) higher aggressions. Identifying iv and dv: dr. smith examines how daily exposure to a sun lamp (1 hour of exposure or no exposure) impacts peoples depression levels in the winter time. Gets the manipulation (play the video game) Equivalent but does not get the manipulation/treatment. Control group will go through same procedure but will not get the treatment (example of the violent video games - they would not get to play the video games!) When researcher preconceived ideas cause to find what they expect to find. Can influence the participant or the researcher e. g. , can be subtle- head nod, smile. Response to the manipulation is due to expectations not the manipulation. Playing violent video games produces higher aggression.
