Biophysical model: argues that physical illnesses are not only caused by biological factors, but also psychosocial factors. Health psychology: concerned with how psychosocial factors relate to the promotion and maintenance of health and with the causation, prevention and treatment of illness. Major causes of death have changed over the last 100 years. Stress: any circumstance that threatens or are perceive to threaten someone well- being and that thereby tax ones coping abilities. All three classes of stressors can have a major impact on physiologial and psychological well-being. Primary appraisal: demands of the situation (what does someone have to do ) Secondary appraisal: resources availabel to cope (how can one deal with it) False appraisals can lead to inappropriate stress response. One way of classifying stressors is as acute or chronic. Acute stressors: threatening events that have a relatively short duration and a clear endpoint (i. e. exam, tra c etc. )
