Document Summary

Homeostasis refers to temperature regulation and other biological processes that keep certain body variables within a fixed range. Reptiles (cid:894)s(cid:374)akes(cid:895) (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t regulate their te(cid:373)perature i(cid:374)ter(cid:374)all(cid:455) In the spring, males will release female pheromones to attract other males and will smother them for their heat to kill off competition. Temperature can affect learning in rats: rats learned better in warmer temperatures. Japanese hornets invade honeybee nests, kill their larvae and eat it: the honeybees will defend themselves by swarming the hornet in large quantities, vibrating and generating enough heat to cook the hornet. Birds can puff up and huddle together to stay warm. A set point refers to a single value that the body works to maintain: example: levels of water, oxygen, glucose, calcium, protein, far, and acidity in the body. Processes that reduce the discrepancies from the set point are known as negative feedback. Any changes to the set point can affect biochemical reactions in the body.
