ww1Mon Dec 11 8:30 am A.C. 2.5 Hours 100mc 10 questions of short answer (20 points)
Conformity and Institutional Support
● Recall: sexual harassment studies
● Whites in south africa and american south in 1950s
● ‘Face-ism’ in media images
○ Relative prominence of faces in portrayals of men and women
○ Men - half or more of photo is taken up my face
○ Women - ⅓ taken up by face (more body shown)
○ Face being shown conveys more intelligence
Learned Cultural Stereotypes: Devine’s Dissociation Model
● Stereotype activation may be automatic
● Knowledge of stereotypes has not declined
● Cultural stereotypes vs personal beliefs
● Found:
○ Knowledge of cultural stereotypes: high and low prejudice were no different
○ Free responses: high prejudice listed more negative traits; low prejudice
discussed equality and negation of stereotypes
○ High or low prejudice = report same cultural stereotype… but differ in personal
endorsement of stereotype (low prejudice don’t believe stereotype applies to
group whereas high prejudice do)
Automatic Stereotype Activation
● Subliminally exposed to 100 words
○ 80 or 20 related to the black stereotype
○ None of the words were related to hostility
● Then read about a man who acted in an ambiguously hostile way
● Those who saw 80 black stereotypic words rated the man as more hostile
● Not moderated by prejudice level
● → potential limitation: not response to neutral stimuli
Dissociation Model
● Cultural stereotypes may come to mind automatically (stereotype activation)
● Expression of stereotypes is controlled (stereotype application)
● Low prejudice individuals have the stereotype activated but strive to keep it out of their
beliefs and judgments
○ But it can still colour perceptions and judgements
● What really distinguishes is the effort to control stereotypes that come to mind
Where do Prejudices and Stereotypes Come From? (THIS IS A SUMMARY - SOME HAVE
ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED AND SOME ARE FURTHER DOWN)
● Social sources
○ Socialization: the prejudiced personality
