Document Summary

Reliability and validity: to be useful a test must be both reliable and valid, that is it must be consistent and measure what it intends to measure, several types of reliability are particularly important for psychological tests. Individuals can be evaluated based on the clinical approach or the actuarial approach. Clinical approach: this is a subjective approach, the practitioner uses their clinical experience and personal judgment, they are guided by intuition rather than formal rules. Medical conditions may play a role in causing abnormal behaviour. Therefore it is important that a general physical examination be conducted as part of the assessment procedure. Brain imaging techniques are used to provide both structural and functional (brain activity) information. Examination; this interview guide prompts the clinician to attend to particular dimensions or aspects of the patient"s functioning: these interview methods also encounter problems with reliability and validity.
