Week 5: Alcohol
Alcohol - Related Disorders
● DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (at least 2 of these symptoms)
● Impaired Control
○ Larger amounts / longer periods → more / longer than intended
○ Desire / unsuccessful efforts to quit
○ A lot of time → not just drinking but includes hangovers etc
○ Cravings → mind focused on drinking
● Social Impairment
○ Social / occupational functioning affected → failure to fulfil obligations
○ Continued use despite interpersonal problems
○ Activities given up due to alcohol
● Risky Use
○ Recurrent use despite physically hazardous → drinking and driving
○ Continued use despite physical / psych problems → anxiety / depression / liver
issues
● Physical Symptoms
○ Tolerance → needing more alcohol to get same effect
○ Withdrawal → continues to drink to relieve the symptoms
● Mild = 2-3 symptoms
● Moderate = 4-5
● Severe = 6+
● Severity can change across time
Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms
● Sweating or increased heart rate
● Hand tremors
● Insomnia
● Nausea or vomiting
● Hallucinations
● Agitation
● Anxiety
● Seizures
● Looking for 2 or more of these symptoms when person has stopped their drinking or
significantly reduced it
DSM-IV
● Use - moderate amounts; no significant interference in functioning
● DSM4 distinguishes between abuse and dependence

Looking for 2 or more of these symptoms when person has stopped their drinking or significantly reduced it. Use - moderate amounts; no significant interference in functioning. Alcohol abuse criteria (at least one of ) these criteria are easy to meet. If they meet one criteria, then you must check for dependence. Common - 12% men, 5% women, binge drinking at canadian universities. Comorbidity - a lot with depression / anxiety, people often using alcohol to cope.
