The one rule that seems to follow is as societies get more complex and more populous = they become more susceptible to social stratification. Some people think the hierarchical ordering of people is unavoidable b/c through this, scarce resources, and the power of a group to control behaviour of others results in some type of social strat. On the other hand some people think social strat is def avoidable and also it counteracts human nature. Poverty is def not random b/c most of categories at risk are women, indigenous people and ethnic minorities. Race: a culturally constructed form of identity and social hierarchy, refers to the presumed hereditary, phenotypic characteristics of a group of people and these phenotypic characteristics are linked with assumed behavioural attributes.
