BIOL 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lumbricus Terrestris, Polychaete, Parapodium
Document Summary
Class polychaeta: possess parapodia and many setae, diverse group and largest class including the tube dwelling forms, burrowing forms and pelagic (open ocean) and crawling forms. Subclass sedentaria: sabellids, tube dwelling fan worms or feather dusters, the tentacles derived from prostomial palps are used for both respiration and filter feeding, ciliated and sweep food particles to central mouth, composed of mucous and sand grains. Genus arenicola: lug worms, resemble the earthworm due to similar burrowing lifestyles arenicola is a sedentary burrower, remaining in its burrow expect when it is disturbed, possesses an eversible, jawless pharynx for feeding and locomotion. Genus amphitrite: tube dwelling polychaete with long, contractile tentacles, tentacles which project from the tube are covered with mucous to which food particles stick and are then deposited in the mouth, parapodia do not act as gills. Genus chaeopterus: highly specialized tube dweller, they pump water through tubes using fan like parapodia and trap food particles in mucous.
