Document Summary

Phylogenetic analyses are ways to infer the order in which events occur during evolution & to understand how groups of species are related. Fossil record provides direct evidence about what organism that lived in past looked liked, where they lived & when they existed. A fossil is a piece of physical evidence from an organism that lived in past. Fossil record is the total collection of fossils that have been found throughout the world. Fossils forming begins when part of an organism is buried in ash, sand, mud, or sediment. If decomposition does not occur, organic remains preserved intact. If sediments accumulate on top of material & becomes cemented into rocks, the sediments weight compresses the organic material below into a thin filament. If remains rot slowly, dissolved minerals can infiltrate the interior or cells & harden into stone, forming a permineralized fossil. Sample database represents a non-random sample of the past.
