Document Summary

Reduced hybrid fertility will not prevent an egg of one species from being fertilized by the sperm of a different species because it occurs after fertilization. Allopatric speciation; have a barrier that stops the flow of genes. Continental drift plays an important role in allopatric speciation because it provides opportunities for populations to break apart. The continental drift of pangea occurred, allopatric speciation on isolated continents occurred; different species were created. Speciation is a slow process to go through many generations of a large population. Speciation is studies in short-lived organisms such as fruit flies to observe how it works to get many generations in. Fruit fly cultures is breaked down as follows; food source, mostly carbs. The experiment was to observe evolution of behavioural isolation in fruit flies. In one mating experiment, female fruit flies were given an option between two males; starch or maltose male. Females chose males that were in the same bottles as themselves.
