Light focussed on specimen via the lenses in the condenser. Good for: coloured specimens (ex: green chloroplasts) To do staining: fix cells (kill, fix so that cells remain in intact form) slice into thin section stain. Phase contrast: using phase of light to contrast cell against a background; makes transparent cell visible. Phase contrast microscopy phase alterations of light transmitted through the specimen are translated into brightness changes // a type of light microscopy.
