BIOL 2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Buccal Pumping, Internal Fertilization, Devonian
Document Summary
When it locates the prey, the ampullae gives shark more information in order to catch the prey. Lateral line system is like a canal or a tube that runs length of body. Canal lls up with water (sea water) and has pores that lead to outside of body. Structures called neuromasts are the sensory structures that provides information to the nervous system. Lateral line system is a system to detect electrochemical changes (changes in water current) Waves are transmitted through pores and into the canal system and hits the neuromasts which relay information to nervous system of sh that allows it to understand where the disturbance is coming from. Hair cells are embedded inside the jello or cupula. Hair cells transmit information from cilia to nervous system. Neuromasts continuously send neural impulses to the brain (even when undisturbed) Cupola of neuromasts are sensitive to movement of lateral line canal uid.
