Fungal infection, surface of skin keratin of skin is infected. 3 specific species to cause af: trichophyton rubrum, trichophyton, mentagrophytes, epidermophyton flocosum*** Common (70% of population will acquire the infection in their life; males > females); uncommon in children. Transmitted by skin contact or indirectly (ie via infected surface) Acute = wet fungal + bacterial infection (thus req abx also to treat bacteria), may also have odor. Goes away on own in 6 months (more likely in children) S&s: skin striations go around the wart not through. Heel, or ball of foot where more likely to have cut so infection can get in. Panty house (creates enviro for fungi to grow) Has is spread to nail? b/c tx will take longer and require po if infected nail. Sx are due to diseases (virus & fungal)
