Document Summary

Euclio is miserable about someone stealing his pot of gold: he has a terrible addiction, as gold does not help him in any way, his tale ends ambiguously. What epiphany made euclio realize that the money is no good for him: overarching theme that money is not everything. Money/love of money is the root of all evil. Money, however, gives people freedom and status: it provides people with a sense of personal power and prestige, it offers security/a safety net, it is arguably, essential for one"s survival. Money ensures that your voice is heard. There is a distinct difference between material wealth and possessions (excessive, frivolous desires) and the need to maintain life"s necessities (need for certain items) Interestingly, the slave in the play can quite literally buy his freedom and manipulate his master. Amount of money one has determines their social standing. Lack of money is bad, but having more money than necessary does not guarantee happiness.
