I have always been on the side of those who seek the truth, but i part ways with them when they think they have found it. The automatic way in which photographs are produced has radically transformed the psychology of the image. Photography"s objectivity confers upon it a degree of credibility absent from any painting. Whatever the objections of our critical faculties, we are obliged to believe in the existence of the object represented (7-8) Defining documentary: b/t: every documentary claims to present factual information about the world, docs make assertions about states of affairs in reality. Boundaries btwn documentary and fiction: documentary mode makes assertions. Fiction films may feature recognizable aspects of reality, may comment on reality, and may even be based on real events: many films combine both fiction mode and documentary mode. Truth-claims: docs: qs about truth: is this film lying, we do not ask of fiction films if they are lying.
