Us opposes elections because it would probably lead to communist victory. Us supports a series unpopular but pro-us leader in the south. Us sends military advisors to help south vietnam in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Under johnson troop levels continue rising until they reach approximately 500,00 in. Peace treaty signed in 1973, us begins removing troops. 1975 us troops are all out, southern government falls, communists take over all of the country. Deaths 58,000 us soldiers, 2 million vietnamese.
