Middle of 19th century is when the study of cinderella began. A woman collected more than 345 versions of cinderella. Aarne thompson"s index was published and it had over 500 variants of cinderella. Perrault"s version is the most popular version of cinderella. Marriage is a central motif in these fairytales. The marriages in 17th century were arranged marriage mostly for social or economic advancement of families. In early 17th century the minor age for men was increased from 20 to 30, and for girls it was increased from 17 to 25 for girls. There was total parental domination over who the children would marry. Marriage without parental (father"s) consent was considered bride theft and it was punishable by death. The institution of marriage slowly changed when the society began changing. Begins with an old woman and three children who are spinning, whoever falls, the daughters eat and kill her. The youngest daughter refused to eat the mother"s meat.
