Lecture 7: the house and family system century; it was common among peasants by the 16th century. Single inheritance through the eldest son was very common in japan among samurai from the 13th. Family continuity is valued by those with property or business. Only one child stays with the parents after marriage. The non-inheriting son sets up his own ie (i. e. dozoku branch house) The inheriting head inherits most of the property, wealth, and privileges of the household. Affairs of ie are managed by the head of the family. The needs of the family override one"s personal desires or needs. Perpetuation of the ie is the primary duty of living family members. There can only be one head of household. If anything happens to the successor, one of the siblings is expected to move back to the family home. The head of the family does not have to be the eldest son, it could even be a daughter.
