Stigma is the negative stereotype and discrimination is the behaviour that results from this negative stereotype. Just 50% of canadians would tell friends or co-workers that they have a family member with a mental illness. People are not secure enough to say that they have a mental illness. Treat everyone with respect, if you have diabetes you don"t say fix your illness ! So why do we say, just stop being sad ! Be positive and there for the person. A medical illness that causes a persistent feeling of a sadness and loss of interest. Symptoms present continuously for a period of 2 weeks and more. Symptoms: changes in eating and sleeping patterns; weight loss or weight gain; loss of interest in activities that usually bring pleasure; loss of energy. Feelings of worthlessness and guilt; inability to concentrate or decide.
