Document Summary

Chromosomes: number of different chromosomes= n (haploid number, total number of chromosomes if 2 sets= 2n (diploid number) one from each parent, ploid refers to chromosomes, di- two, therefore, diploid= 2 sets of each chromosomes. Chromosomes: chromosomes are all different, they contain different genes (nucleotide sequences coding for something, are different lengths, 23 different chromosomes in human cells. Chromosomes & cell division: individual chromosomes are recognizable only during mitosis, when cell is not dividing, the chromosomes are thin & form a network in the nucleus, individual chromosomes are not recognizable. Genetic material (heritable information: dna located in nucleus, organized into chromosomes, chromosomes are part of chromatin, chromatin is a complex of dna associated with proteins. Euchromatin & heterochromatin: euchromatin: loosely packed regions, genes active in rna transcription. Chromosomes & cell division: daughter cells are identical copies of parent cell, this means each daughter cell contains exact same heritable material (dna) as parent cell did.
