It"s a mental disorder characterized by periods of excitability/mania alternating with periods of severe depression. During periods of mania, person with bipolar disorder may be impulsive & energetic, with exaggerated sense of self. The depressive phase brings feelings of anxiety, low self-worth & suicidal thoughts. People have at least one fully manic episode w/periods with major depression. A severe maniac episode includes suicidal or violent behavior, aggressiveness, psychosis (hallucinations, delusions) Experience hypomania (elevated levels of energy & impulsiveness that aren"t the same as extreme symptoms of mania). Hypomanic periods alternative with major depressive disorders. Many periods of more mild hypomania & depression, with less-severe mood swings. Over a period of at least 2 years, have symptoms 50% of the time, and not symptom free for longer than 2 months. Elevated mood (increased energy, lack of self-control, hyperactivity, loud speech) Hypomania is less intense & doesn"t last as long as mania.
