Known as kollywood" (filmed in the koddambakkam" area of madras) Second largest film industry in india: bengali tollygunge. Known for artistic content, treatment of sensitive issues and realism. Became the source of the art" cinema genre. People like bimal roy come from bengal: punjabi pollywood, telugu tollywood, marathi marathi cinema. Based in karnataka, a producer of sandalwood: malayalam mollywood, urdu cinema lollywood. Interchange occurs between regional cinema industries (directors, composers) Movies that become hits in one region are often remade in another e. g roja from kollywood was remade in bollywood. Came about in the early 1950s as a complete contrast to pop cinema. Dealt with issues at a more realistic level than popular cinema. This movement was started by satyajit ray one of the most famous art film directors from india.
