Basic concepts in immunology: defense from infectious disease: the cloud of microbes that cover us or are in us, protect us from other pathogens. Clostridium difficile: bacteria found in the gut: feces filled capsules treat bacterial infection. Immunology: the study of our protection from, and response to foreign invading organisms and altered host cells. Viruses: in many cases, activating the immune system is the only way to fight the disease. Bacteria: synergism between antibiotics and the immune system, antibiotics work only with a good immune system. If the infection and the immunity in the body is equally balanced, no disease will occur. If the immunity/host defence mechanisms are greater than the infection, disease will occur. If infection stays at the same level but immunity is failing, disease will occur. Factors that lower immune system: allergy, autoimmune disease, acute inflammation-sepsis, cytokine storm, chronic inflammation-cancer. Our immune system has 3 layers: anatomical and physiological barriers.
