Lecture 19 - the american system of manufacturing. Updated: early american system of manufacturing (asm) Used specialized machine tools: was a piece of machinery that would make parts for other machines; tools making tools. Standard part: going to look the same as the other parts that are manufactured; standardized. Interchangeable part: could be swapped out for another part because they look exactly the same. With the american system of manufacturing, the parts in each product are exactly the same because they are standardize and because of this, they are also interchangeable. This system was actually developed in france with using standardized parts. Never took off in france because the french government was worried with this system; they felt it would take away their power from artisans and crafts people who they had more control over. Some of this information will be on the midterm exam. The united states was experiencing high immigration rates; had lots of cheap land available.
