Wwi was a 20th century war fought with 19th century tactics . Wwi (1914-1918): 10m lives lost,2x more wounded. Often called the great war or war to end all wars because at that time, people never believed a war of this scale could ever happen again. Understanding the role of science and technology in wwi in large part is based on understanding the mixed attitudes people had towards technology and the problems associated with battle strategy. This is best explained by the following important quote: wwi was a 20th century war fought with 19th century tactics . For example, while some advanced technologies were available during wwi, initial war strategies and tactics did not change in terms of choices related to time, space, transportation of men and materials. Wwi military also had to figure out the characteristics of a new technology and then decide how it should be used.
