Eugenics was considered by many to be a legiimate science for the irst half of the 20th. Yet the science itself was very lawed and rooted in gender and racial bias. Provides us with an excellent example of why science is not always value-free . By start of 20th century, darwin"s ideas of survival of the itest were seen as a way to jusify social evoluionary research. Social darwinism: individuals compete amongst each other and only the it survive. Eugenics: a scieniic movement which believed that humans could command their own evoluion in an eicient and progressive manner. Control reproducive decisions to gain certain social goals (posiive and negaive eugenics) in 1904, carnegie insituion establishes center for geneic research at cold spring. Davenport interested in ideas about human inheritance and represents typical eugenicist who believed almost all human characterisics were geneically based. This included linking behavior, personality traits and diseases through family lineages.
