NATS 1940 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Marsupial Mole, Eutheria, Sugar Glider
Document Summary
Lecture #3 - classification cont"d history of evolutionary thought cont"d. Shapes: spheres (cocci), rods (bacilli), corkscrews (spiral bacteria) In water, soil, air; on and in plants and animals. About 3% of known species cause disease in humans. Cell wall containing peptidoglycan (different type of chemical). Heat, high salt levels, high pressure, cold etc. Does not cause disease (except, possibly tooth decay) Phylum > subphylum > inpraphylum > super class > class > subclass > infraclass > superorder etc . Remains or impressions of organisms from the past, mineralized in rocks. Fossils occur in sedimentary rock layers (strata; singular, stratum) > the layers. Form under water, not on land and in layers. Each stratum has its own distinctive set of fossils. Fossils in older strata tend to be more different from modern-day organisms than those from more recent strata. Droughts, fires, floods & other catastrophes periodically wipe out local organisms.
