Security is achieved through military strength: -international system and state is built by men who are crude, selfish and violent; life is nasty, brutish and short -hobbes. If it did exist, it would need a way to force all states to obey. Realists say it is impossible, states will only cooperate when beneficial to themselves. Deals between states are short lived and issue based. That"s the way the world is , it"s human nature . Kenneth waltz - most famous/influential structural realist, wrote book man, the state, and war . 3 levels of analysis: people (man, the state, war. Before waltz - man is inherently weak and violent, they don"t think for themselves, and surrender to authority. War and organized violence are inevitable because of who we are. It is in human nature to act on self-interest.
