An emotion is a patterned collection of chemical and neural responses that is produced by the brain when it detects the presence of an emotionally competent stimulus an object or situation etc. , Feelings are the mental representation of the physiological changes that characterize emotions . The expression of the emotions in man and animals. Book written by darwin regarding non verbal communication. Darwin believed that the majority of emotions and their expressions are innate. Serviceable associated habits: emotions have survival value in the past, for example a dog bares his teeth for threat gesture. Antithesis: darwin proposed that the expression of opposite emotions, i. e. anger and calm, involved opposite behaviors. Direct action of the nervous system: this means that emotional expressions occur simply because of changes in nervous system activity, i. e. trembling when experiencing fear. Emotion and the nervous system increased heart rate, respiration, perspiration and blood pressure. Sympathetic nervous system activates with emotional arousal.
