Document Summary

Independent variables sometimes called the treatment, treatment variable, or manipulated variable. Acts as the first step for any good experiment. A good way to remember: the independent variable is independent because it stands alone. It has no effect in itself but effects something else. The before the thing that is predicted to have a causal effect on the outcome being measured. The iv, is manipulated by the experimenter but sometimes the participants can be the manipulators. It is the casual or explanatory variable that is believed to be responsible for particular effects. The iv helps to explain the why of things. Why certain things happen the way they do. The thing you do, is the iv. treatment: the experimental intervention that distinguishes between the participants in different experimental conditions. Manipulation: the process of systematically varying the iv across different experimental conditions.
