Developmental psych lecture 5 emotional development (monika janus) Emotional development involves the emergence of a child"s experience, expression, understanding and regulation of emotions from birth throughout life. Does not occur in isolation progresses along with cognitive and physical development. Interaction with contextual, social and cultural influences, parents don"t have good understanding of ed. Emotions: subjective reactions to something in the environment, experienced cognitively as either pleasant/unpleasant, accompanied by physiological changes and expressed in some form of visible behaviour, universality of primary emotions success in communicating and interpreting our emotions = social success. Emotional development is influenced by many factors: genetic inheritance, conditions of the environment, interactions with family members and peers. Emotions are seen as products of biological factors. Individual differences in temperament play a central role in how intensely children react to emotionally arousing situations & in how well they are able to regulate their reaction. Right & left brain hemispheres control joy and fear expressions.
