Emotions: subjective reactions to something in the environment, experienced cognitively as either pleasant/unpleasant, accompanied by physiological changes and expressed in some form of visible behaviour, universality of primary emotions success in communicating and interpreting our emotions = social success. Emotional development is influenced by many factors: genetic inheritance, conditions of the environment, interactions with family members and peers. Emotions are seen as products of biological factors. Individual differences in temperament play a central role in how intensely children react to emotionally arousing situations & in how well they are able to regulate their reaction. Right & left brain hemispheres control joy and fear expressions.
