Psychoanalysis: procedures for changing personality based on comprehensive theory of a personality and a related approach to research. Freud was the originator of psychoanalysis and his ideas dominate psychoanalytic strategy. Conceptualized the framework of the mind in 2 ways: Sigmund freud: a prolific writer, he remains the most cited and probably most influential psychologist of all time. He was the first to popularize psychotherapy as a form of treatment: functions of personality (id, ego, superego, levels of awareness (unconscious, preconscious, conscious) Psychoanalytic theorists fall into 5 broad camps: freudian, revisionist stage theorist henry murray, motivational psychologist mcclleland, ego psychologist how ego manage personality, defense mechanisms, object relations theorists splitting all good or all bad . Psychoanalytic theory posits that inborn forces, or drives, direct our thoughts and behavior. Unsatisfied drives result in tension, relieved only when the drive is expressed. The two classes of drives that freud identified as motivating virtually all human behavior are the self-preservative and sexual drives.
