Fear is a state of immediate alarm in response to a serious, known threat to one"s well being. Anxiety is a state of alarm in response to a vague sense of being in danger (a fear response to an anticipated situation). It is a response to a perceived threat: anxiety is a heightened, abnormal level of fear. Both have the same physiological features; increase in respiration, perspiration, muscle tension etc. Normal anxiety levels motivate us to function properly (ex: worrying about a test makes you study harder) Is the most common type of mental disorder in the us. 18% of adults experience one of the six dsm5 anxiety disorders: 29% develop one of the disorders at some point in their lives, 1/5th seek treatment. Most individuals with one anxiety disorder also suffer from a second. In addition, many people with anxiety disorder also experience depression. People with anxiety disorders are aware that they suffer from an abnormality (like depressive disorders)
