Psychological treatments of depression: behavioural therapy, helping depressed persons make increased contact w ith reinforcing (positive) events i. ii. Increase events that lead to a sense of mastery - sense of achievement. Increase engagement in pleasurable activities - pleasurable activities intervention : behavioural activity scheduling b: effective treatment for suicidal and severe depression. Alterations between full manic and depressive episodes. Manic episode: abnormally exaggerated elation or irritable mood + 3 additional symptoms. Flight of ideas; excessive involvement in pleasurable activities likely to have undesirable consequences. Note: euphoria not core feature; irritability or depressive features more common. Average onset: 18 years, but can begin in childhood. Women: more depressive episodes and less manic episodes. Men: more manic episodes in comparison to women. Some lose insight into condition resulting in treatment resistance. Alterations between mdd episodes and hypomanic episodes.
