Daily exchanges can either maintain or reduce intimacy: based on how people perceive their partner as being responsive to their needs/ disclosures. Disclosures that are more personal, emotional, and honest are most likely to promote intimacy: the motivation to disclose is provoked by goals and needs. The responsiveness of the partner to the disclosure is determined by the respondent"s motives, needs, goals, and fears. The discloser"s perception of responsiveness is determined whether they feel understood, validated, cared for. Key factor: the extend to which we feel understood, validated, and cared for by our partner. Perceived partner responsiveness: greater closeness, greater satisfaction and commitment, sexual satisfaction (a way of expressing responsiveness) Responsiveness to another person"s needs by behaving in ways that communicate care, validation, and facilitate adaptive coping.
