However in about 2-3% of pregnancies the amniotic sac will rupture early, i. e. , premature rupture of the membranes (prom) Contractions, in cases of prom, often begin within 12-24 hours. Latent phase: lasts less than 20 hours contractions 5 30 minutes apart lasting 15-40s (usually not painful) Active phase: contractions 2-5 minutes apart lasting 45-60s most painful period. Effacement: thinning of the cervix- baby begins to enter the birth canal. Typically lasts less than 2 hours (even for firstborns) less for subsequent children. Usually delivered in the head first or vertex position. Delivery of placenta and remaining of umbilical cord. Fewer and milder contractions (10 minutes to an hour)
