The highest rates of food insecurity in canada are found among households where the respondent idenofied as indigenous or black. Response to food insecurity and hunger tends to be food banks or soup kitchens: these are inadequate because they do not tackle the root causes of food insecurity: Lack of access to healthy food options. Need policies that deal with complexity of causes: Improving the circumstances of people on social assistance. Increase access to affordable housing and childcare. Increase access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. Problem: food systems: consequences of industrial food system: Low-income neighborhoods do not have grocery stores but have many fast-food restaurants and liquor stores. Food that is accessible is often processed and does not meet nutritional needs (not whole foods) Cheap food, year round producgon (why is it cheap?) How to achieve food justice: recognize social, cultural, political dimensions of food and food systems, recognize the costs of the industrial food system, address underlying issues.
