Chronic tension between opposing interests: workers want better wages, working conditions and more autonomy. Employers want higher profits, lower costs, and increased productivity. Have different definitions of social justice and economic reality. Why join a union: job security, better wages and benefits. Union advantage: improved working conditions, fairness, human rights, equity. That changes with the times depending on current conditions. Strength in numbers collective security got your back" = power. Fight injustice and inequities in the workplace fair treatment = fairness. Political and policy change to improve conditions for working people = justice. Control over jobs / workplace = democracy. Union wage premium earn 10% more - /hr. Women benefit even more than men - /hr!
