WRIT 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Language Change, Recap (Software), Linda Flower
Document Summary
How do written and spoken language differ: learning. Spoken language is naturally learned, written language is taught: grammar & syntax, audience. Audience in spoken language (engaging, present and responding), audience through written language is absent through process: planning. In speaking very little planning involved in, in writing a lot of planning & revision involved: permanence. Spoken language not permanent (paradox: yet what is said can never be taken back), written language is permanent, fluid: memory. In spoken language, you are forced to remember what is being said in order to follow the speaker, in written language you can always go back to the text and re- read: text content. The listener is at the mercy of the speaker, the speaker decides the order and what is going to be said. In written language, the reader decides the speed, pace, topic, etc: time and space.
