In english , speakers use mine basic sentence patterns , and a long number of sub- patterns which include sentence positions , each with a particular grammatical meaning . However , since most english sentence follow these nine pattern , we shall examine them in the following paragraphs . This is the simplest pattern in english . Came: he arrived, they left, it works. Notice that the verb in the above sentence is " intransitive " . An intransitive verb does not need an object to fulfill the meaning of sentence . In other words , an intransitive verb can stand by itself with the subject and make a complete sentence . , few english sentence are as brief as the above , because we normally extent the subject and the verb by modifiers for more meaning , clarity and explanation .
